Have you discussed movies and had someone ask you which movie you have seen the most times? A friend of mine claimed Breakfast at Tiffany and another Flåklypa Grandprix (a Norwegian kids movie with puppets, the plot of which is exactly like the pod-race in Phantom Menace. Only Flåklypa came out in 1975. This fact has been discussed to death in Norwegian media).

But what was my film? Well, after some pondering I realised it was Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Yes, that Robin Hood – with Kevin Costner and the Bryan Adams song. Why this movie? I suspect because of the pseudo-medieval setting and a strange teenage crush on Christian Slater. Thankfully the crush was shifted to Alan Rickmans Sherriff (he will indeed cut your heart out with a spoon), but that is another matter. After a while I suspect the movie went to that place movies sometimes go, where you know the plot so well there is a certain comfort factor in watching it. That is my only feeble explanation.

This movie conversation made me fear I’m developing a trend. A few years back I was interviewed by the student newspaper for the column “What are you reading”. At the time I was rereading all my fantasy books, and was in the middle of the not so brilliant Dragonlance series by Weiss and Hickman. When the newspaper came out all the other people had answered things like Kafka and Toni Morrison. One was even reading about String Theory – just for fun. The column was illustrated with pictures, and to top it of the flash of the camera had made my left eye twitch, thereby completing my image of slightly demented dorkitude.

BTW for the full glory of Prince of Thieves go here.
